How The Clippers Got Here

Signing

Rui Hachimura: 2 years, $28M

Signed this offseason and already the preseason opener's top scorer (21 points vs. Golden State).

Signing

Bradley Beal: 2 years, $13.2M

Signed using Non-Bird rights.

Trade

Kawhi Leonard to Toronto

Back came Brandon Ingram, Gradey Dick, two unprotected first-round picks, a first-round pick swap and two second-round picks.

Trade

Max Strus acquired

Johni Broome, who came over in the same trade, was waived. Two-way center Jamarion Sharp was also waived.

Penalty

$30M fine, five firsts gone

The NBA closed its investigation into Kawhi Leonard's compensation: the organization was fined $30M and stripped of 5 first-round picks. Kawhi was personally fined for improper benefits.

Cap Terms, Fun-GM Style

Trade Player Exception (TPE)

When a team trades a player away for less salary than it takes back, the difference can become a TPE: room to absorb a player in a later trade without sending matching salary out. The Clippers' $17M Collins TPE is the big one. TPEs expire, so they are a use-it-or-lose-it chip.

Mid-Level Exception (MLE)

A tool that lets an over-the-cap team sign free agents without cap space. The Clippers have $1.0M of it left.

Biannual Exception (BAE)

A smaller exception a team can use only every other year. The Clippers have $5.4M available.

Non-Bird rights

A way to re-sign a team's own free agent, within limits, even when it has no cap space. It is how Bradley Beal's deal was done.

Exhibit 10 contract

A non-guaranteed camp contract. Players who are waived can often be assigned to the team's G League affiliate (for the Clippers, San Diego). That is what happened with Hunter Sallis and Jason Preston on Sept 27.
